Chattanooga Part 2

Orchard Knob

On November 23rd, the Union army advanced from Chattanooga and captured Orchard Knob.  The top picture gives a good indication of the size of the hill.  The bottom picture shows the view of the Confederate defenders.  The modern road on the right extending into the distance heads into Chattanooga.  Sherman marched under cover of the distant hills beyond.  Lookout Mountain is the prominent hill on the right center, and Missionary Ridge is the wooded ridge on the left half of the picture.  Grant's HQ on the day of the battle on the 25th was here at Orchard Knob.

To Tunnel Hill

Sherman deployed his men here on a hill overlooking Tunnel Hill, the northern end of the Confederate position on Missionary Ridge.  Tunnel Hill was occupied by Cleburne's division, which had been recalled from joining Longstreet at Knoxville.  The slopes are steep, and the topography is difficult to understand, so the hill was very defensible.  The above map should be useful to you, particularly on the next page.
