Rosecrans' HQ

Longstreet's column continued into the Union rear and reached this clearing.  On the ridge in the center of the picture, Rosecrans had made his headquarters.  He was now fleeing with much of his army, and this portion of the ridge was unoccupied.  The ridge continues north, and visible through the trees on the right of the picture, 29 Union guns with some rallied infantry made a stand at Dyer Field.

Dyer Field

The Union guns and infantry were deployed on the ridge on the left of the picture.  Confederate infantry attacked from the woods on the far right of the picture.  A total of five Confederate brigades attacked the Yankees in front and flank and captured the ridge and most of the guns.

Map of Snodgrass Hill Area

After action at and near Dyer Field off this map to the south, the Confederates turned north.  We will next see where action took place near the South Carolina Monument, visible in the lower right of the map, which is essentially on an extension of the ridge at Dyer Field.  The action then moved to Snodgrass House and Hill northwest of the monument.

From SC Monument

Harker's Federal brigade of Woods' division deployed along the tree-line on the far left of the picture and attacked in their flank the Confederates in this open ground who had captured Dyer's Field.  The Yankees pushed them back then returned to a defensive position at the tree-line on the left.  Kershaw's Confederate division from Longstreet's column deployed and attacked Harker.  Outnumbered two to one, Harker fell back to Snodgrass Hill, having bought valuable time for the Union army.
