Vicksburg Part 2

May 19 to July 4, 1863

De Golyer's Battery

This is the location of Captain Samuel DeGolyer's battery of the 8th Michigan Artillery.  On May 22nd, the battery bombarded the Great Redoubt to prepare it for assault.

Looking Toward the Great Redoubt

This is the view from DeGolyer's battery toward the Great Redoubt, showing just how hilly the land here is.  The Louisiana Monument on the distant hill marks the location of the Great Redoubt.

From the Great Redoubt

South of Sherman's corps, only seven of the thirty regiments in McPherson's corps attacked, and the assault on the 3rd La. Redan quickly petered out.  However, Stevenson's brigade attacked the Great Redoubt, and his troops even got their battle flags to the walls of the fort.  Despite their efforts, the attack failed.
