HMS Warrior - Propulsion

Boiler Room

With the help of a bucket suspended from the ceiling, Warrior's 850 tons of coal, stored in bunkers between the furnaces and hull, was fed with shovels into the many furnaces, with four furnaces for each of the ship's ten boilers.  The waste - ash and cinders - was removed.  Steam power wasn't perfected yet, and at least one of the boilers was usually under repair.

Steam Engine

Relatively low pressure steam from ten boilers went to the horizontal two cylinder engine which turned the shaft at no more than 56 rpm.
