This fort and Fort des Salettes were designed to dominate the road from
Italy from both sides. The fort and Fort Randouillet also helped
protect Fort des Tetes which is on high ground overlooking Briancon,
which is behind Fort des Tetes.

There are casemated guns in the flanks of the bastions, dominating the ditch.
