M-24 Chaffee

M-24 Chaffee at Ft. Knox

Development began in March 1943 for a replacement for the Stuart.  The M-24 Chaffee was first deployed in late 1944.  The tank was maneuverable, well armored, and well armed for a light tank, mounting a 75mm gun comparable to the original armament of the Sherman - and featured a smooth ride with its torsion bar suspension.  This successful design was used internationally for decades.
