M-3 Stuart

M-3 Stuart

The M-3 shown here represents one of the 192nd Tank Bn. in the Philippines in 1941.  The M-3 was accepted by the army in March of that year and was used by the British in North Africa that summer.  Over 13,000 M-3 Stuarts were produced between 1941 and 1943.  Maneuverable, with a top speed of 36 mph, and armed with a 37 mm gun and five machine guns, it was useful early in the war, especially North Africa, but the main gun was inadequate against most enemy tanks, so the tank was later used in reconnaissance units.

M-3 Stuart

Because of lack of rivets, a significant innovation of the era, and lack of a cupola on the turret, this appears to be an M-3A1, a slightly later version.
